Wild Dreams and Wildflowers

Preview

Twenty one days into the summer season. Slowing down one's pace does not necessarily slow down time...

While not everyone favors Summer, especially on those too hot and too humid days, it still brings a special contagious quality: unfiltered energy, boundless freedom, and nostalgic warmth.

Summer reminds me of my own childhood, where it meant time to change rhythm, and abandon strict schedules. My senses also associate the season with the smell of sunscreen, the taste of melting ice cream and fresh watermelons. And most recently I associate Summer with wildflowers.

A few months ago, I did some research to create a wildflower pattern to enter into the Spoonflower Design Challenge. It was quite surprising for me to learn that such a beautiful variety of flowers can grow naturally without deliberate human planting or cultivation. These beauties thrive in the wild and brave harsh uncultivated environments; they embody untamed beauty and the simple, natural joys of life.

While I cannot bottle such joy, freedom, and resilience to spray it on like perfume and obtain its essence, I can motivate my inner wildflower child to tell me what she would love to do this Summer. I drafted a feminine flowery journal page and titled it "Wildest Dreams Bucket List."

I'm gifting this journal page to subscribers of The Craft.

Now, let's remove some mental restrictions around the words "wild" and "untamed" by looking at a wildflower as an example. In the wildflower context the words can embody a willingness to grow firm and strong within harsh environments. A wildflower exercises its freedom by adapting and demonstrating resilience no matter what seasonal barriers are coming at it. In my case, one line on my bucket list will be as simple as "go out for at least one hour three times a week." As you may have read in my chapter stories of The Craft, current circumstances do not allow much time for leisure. Is this line wild? To me it is. Giving myself permission to enjoy the sun—with no other to-do mixed in—sounds almost impossible even as I write it. But I will arm myself with courage, disregard my brain's constant protests of, "but this or that will not get done and you ...," fill in the blank.
